Description

One day Peter Erskine approached the folks at DW with a simple question question, "What if there was a travel kit that didn't sound like a travel kit?"

Seemed obvious enough; after all, we've all struggled with trying to get our kit from point A to point B. For years DW worked hard to create a kit that would be small enough to be travel-friendly, yet still have the warm, large, resonant sound of a full kit. The design team at DW landed on a 12x20" bass drum with low-mass spurs and lightweight ratchet bass drum mount, an 11x14" floor tom with aluminum legs, a traditional 8x12" rack tom with STM mount, and a matching 5x14" snare drum.

What gives these smaller drums their larger than life sound is DW's patented HVLT Design Series Shells. The HVLT is a Vertical Low Timbre shell with a horizontal outer ply. This gives the drums a lower fundamental pitch with enhanced resonance. The horizontal outer play gives these drums a rigid structure with added stability. Crafted from 100% maple; these drums have a warm, resonant, full-bodied tone that can't be beat.

These drums also feature low-mass mini turret lugs hat allow the drum shell to breath freely and become more resonant. The True-Pitch tension rods and triple-flange hoops help keep this drums in tune longer while the DW Heads by Remo give it a sound that is hard to match.

The snare features DW's patented MAG throw-off and three point butt plate.  A purposefully simple design, the MAG is a workhorse drop throw-off with horizontal tension adjustment. It gets its name from a clever magnet that's integrated into the body of the throw-off. When the handle is in the upright position, it won’t release without a slight tug. When it does release, it throws the strainer completely off the head to avoid any strainer buzz. The innovative three-point butt plate, allows you to easily and accurately toggle between 3 different levels of strainer tension. It's also comes with a set of DW Tru-Tone snare wires to give it a true, pure voice and response.

Yet again this is a shell set, which means that cymbals and hardware are not included. You kind find these things in the "Things You'll Need" section.

Comments about Drum Workshop Design Series Frequent Flier 4-Piece Shell Set:

I labored over purchasing this kit (Tobacco)...sadly there's not much on the internet about how truly versatile the kit can be. There's clearly a Jazz slant given the references to Erskine...and I enjoy the genre. However, I wanted an acoustic kit that could cover various styles of music and not take up a lot of space...I knew this would mean sacrafices. However, this kit delivered...it was flawless when opened...I felt as if I bought a luxury car in comparison to some other kits I have purchased. The most important...the range...just incredible...I tuned it low for rock...and up for Jazz and Reggae...it's just great. The Bass drum is astounding...20" in diameter and 12" deep...I can feather it...and KICK it...

Very happy with this kit...and line from DW...the kit doesn't top out...you can play softly and present the dynamics...and play it hard to rock it out...the cross stick is excellent...and the bass drum delivers...it sings. I'm an enthusiast...so I play for fun and with friends...I've been through V-Drums and other acoustic drums...so in comparison...for acoustic..DW all the way. The kit is compact, well engineered, and a pleasure to play...the tuning range is broad given the tension rod threading...low and it holds...high and it holds...and across the spectrum, it sings. My only comment...I wish DW had demo'd the kit with more than the Jazz slant with Erskine...the promo video mentioned "Rock"...but it felt like it was thrown in because Erskine didn't highlight it...that's what made me hesitate with my purchase...In actuality the kit can deliver a broad spectrum of genres...not Death Metal...but definately Rock, Jazz Reggae, Funk...and it works well at home (for me), but definately in a studio and live...and I'm certain it can be mic'd well for larger venues. I can pull off Rock to Bossa to Jazz to Reggae...etc...it just works! I took a leap and tried it thinking the Jazz sizes would be broader than represented given the shell construction DW employs for this kit...so I'm glad I did!

Great job DW! ...the next drum I buy will be DW...no question!

Gentle suggestion...maybe consider demonstrating the versatility of this kit...I'm certain others would embrace it knowing it is more versatile than presented.
