The Hampton is a 21st-century update of the Supro electric solid-body guitar. The elegant comfort of the 1960’s-era beveled-edge Ozark body shape and the mighty sound of the original field-coil pickups have been enhanced with an ultra-fast satin neck, Tune-o-matic bridge and updated wave tailpiece. The result is a modern player’s instrument with old-school style and authentic Supro tone.

The unique Gold Foil pickups found in the Supro Hampton are faithful reproductions of the original magnetics developed for Valco by Ralph Keller in the early 1950s. These pickups, which gave voice to the vintage Chicago-made Supro guitars, have a massive, broadband sound with remarkably low noise for a single-coil design. The mini-humbucker-sized version of the Supro Gold Foil pickup found in this guitar have the same internal construction as the humbucker-sized versions found in the other Island Series models. The Hampton’s bridge pickup is wound slightly hotter than the others, while the middle pickup is RWRP, providing fully hum-cancelling sound in the “2 and 4” positions of the 5-way blade switch.

The time-tested tone wood recipe of an alder body paired with a 25 ½”-scale maple neck and rosewood fretboard combine with the Hampton’s vintage-correct pickups to produce an exceptionally dynamic playing experience. Blending vintage American tone with refined set-neck design, the Supro Hampton is intended for the professional musician who needs an ergonomic and versatile guitar capable of handling most genres of music with authority. The three pickups cover a huge range of tones, from fat single-coil jazz tones in the neck position to spanky funk tones and sparkling twang in the middle, and pure rock power when the bridge pickup is selected. Case not included.

The Hampton guitar and its relatives in the Island Series represent the rebirth of the Supro brand as a stringed instrument manufacturer. The Supro Island series of guitars was designed by David Koltai and Glenn Sweetwood, with technical assistance from master designer Trevor Wilkinson and vintage pickup expert Ken Calvet.

A Sleeper

This was an impulse buy and I expected a quirky and temperamental niche instrument, as the original Supros were. What I got was a well-designed, versatile guitar that's been my go-to for gigging and recording. it's light, it's comfortable to play standing or sitting, it stays in tune, it doesn't feed back and the pickups are remarkably quiet for single coils. The neck is great; very Gibson-like. The whole guitar feels wonderfully solid and substantial, despite being about the size and weight of an SG. The pickups are fantastic - like a strat but meatier - and I wish there were an aftermarket source for them. They have the single coil clarity and balance but there's a roundness in them I haven't heard anywhere else. They've got a lot of output and less hum than any other single-coil I know of. There's three of them and a five-position switch with all the usual combos. And that's it. really. The whole design is basic and simple; there's absolutely nothing fiddly or delicate or complicated about it (although the gold foil in the pickups gets marred pretty quickly if you're a super aggressive picker like me).

Holy Cow!!

Okay. Full Disclosure: I took advantage of a really great blowout from Sam Ash, so I got my Hampton for a great price. Also, mine is blue, not black. So I bought this while my amp was being shipped so I had to play it acoustically for a few weeks before plugging it in. For an electric, it has amazing acoustic qualities. To me that's a good indicator that it'll sound good plugged in - provided that the pickups are okay. When I finally got the chance to plug it into my Tone King Imperial MKII, it blew me away! This guitar sounds like a million bucks. It's unique, but hauntingly reminiscent of a lot of classic rock recordings. One pickup setting is as spanky as a "t-style" guitar. While I was waiting for my amp to come in I scoured the internet soaking up videos on this guitar. They're out there, but I feel that they don't quite capture the full breadth and depth of this guitar's capabilities. The neck is a C shape, slightly on the beefy side. It has a satin finish on the back that's extremely smooth with just enough texture that you can slide your hand up and down it and still know exactly where you are. It's the most comfortable neck I've ever played, and I've played a lot of them. Also, the fit and finish are superb, but I'm not a fine-toothed comb perfectionist like some of you folks out there. There are no obvious, glaring defects that I can see, and I know what to look for. My one complaint: THIS GUITAR COMES WITH NO CASE OR GIG BAG. Let's face it - at this price point it's a no brainier. The guitar should come with a fitted, high quality hard shell case to protect your investment. There are lots of cases that will fit this guitar but I shouldn't have the hassle of finding one. Although I'm disappointed about the lack of a case, it's definitely not a deal breaker for me. Anyway, if you've had your eye on a Supro, you owe it to yourself to get one. You will not be disappointed.
