When it was founded in 1976, Kramer was going up against two major guitar manufactures - Gibson and Fender. Though the brand found some initial success thanks in part to several innovative designs, it wouldn’t really take off with mainstream guitarists until Eddie Van Halen endorsed the brand in the 1980s.
Van Halen had very specific needs for his guitars, so invested significant time in trying to combine the best of what was available to him. And with Kramer’s custom designs, Van Halen got everything he needed. With one of the world’s most popular guitarists on board, Kramer topped all other guitar manufacturers in sales during the mid-1980s, but its popularity eventually faded.
Kramer was later purchased and revived by Gibson guitars. The newer models harken back to the days of Jon Bon Jovi and Tom Morello, but there are metal guitarists all over the world shredding away on a Kramer, just like they have for decades.
