Line 6
In the big picture, Line 6 is a fairly new company. Founded in 1996, they've been innovating and improving on music technology in a way no other company has before. With their digital expertise, Line 6 ushered in a new era of sound and playing options.
The AxSys 212 was Line 6's first product. Brought to market in 1996, their inaugural release was the first modeling guitar amp that used software-based models to mimic a variety of tube amplifiers. Having multiple amp models and various classic guitar effects, projected through a 2x12 combo amp, was unprecedented at that time.
Line 6's early years saw them continuing to produce an interesting array of products that changed the musical landscape. In 1998, they released their Amp Farm TDM, which transferred their modeling technology into plug-in format software for Digidesign and Pro Tools. The original POD was also released in 1998, revolutionizing modeling with its 16 amp sets, 16 effects and selection of speaker cabs, which could run directly in to recording equipment, an amp, or a PA.
In 1999, the first iteration of the now infamous Spider amplifier was released in a 50-watt 1x12 combo that sported 6 amp models and 7 effects models, as well as factory and programmable presets. A standalone 4x12 cabinet would later follow.
Other notable products throughout the company's history include the Echo Pro studio rack mount effects unit, Variax electric guitars with built-in modeling, and Flextone Amp Series.
It's no doubt that Line 6 has done a lot to pioneer digital effects in the guitar world. They've also come a long way in doing it. Nowadays, their products feature highly advanced modeling technology that undetectably imitates classic amplifiers, stompboxes, and effects. Here's a look at some of the most prolific and powerful technology Line 6 has to offer:
