"The Best Overdrive Pedal Period "

The Ibanez Tube Screamer Is a Great Overdrive Pedal. It replaced a Boss Blues Driver on my effects chain. Every Guitarist that is serious about good overdrive tone without excessive noise should own one. I don't know how I played without one now that I use it on my Fender Twin & Blues Junior tube Amps.

THE Cure for a single channel tube amp

I use this unit as a light crunch for my single channel Fender Blues Junior, since it doesn't have a drive channel. It's GREAT for that. It's the industry standard in a acheiving great overdrive and distortion sounds in a compact, rugged unit. The vintage voicing makes it the perfect fix for any single channel tube amp and a must-have for classic rock and blues. But for that's where the limitations begin. For the jazz player, it doesn't offer a light enough crunch at the lowest setting. For the progressive rock player, still excluding metal et al, it doesn't have powerful enough gain or sustain. You'll need additional effects. The tone knob is also limited in the control it gives you. Overall, great quality if you like the tone right out of the box. Beyond that, you don't have a lot of headroom to shape it. It excels at what it's supposed to do, but it won't solve all your problems.

A real Tube Screamer

I had one of the originals back in the day and when I decided to play professional again this was one of the first things I bought. I remember the Tube Screamer being a good way to get an old Marshall head to start barking and that hasn't changed. I know there is a lot of discussion on the chips and such but hey, if you want a funky green overdrive pedal to start pushing your amp from the go then the TS9 will put a smile on your face. Remember that it is NOT a high gain distortion stompbox. That was never it's intent, use the Tube Screamer in front of your amp and set your gain at a nice crunch so you can clean it up with the guitar volume and you can get some awesome rock tones from the 80's! I am currently using it in front of a Mesa/Boogie 50 caliber+ on the rhythm channel to get some great crunchy sounds. (Yes, the lead channel is all Boogie and is gain insane for when I want to go there) Bottom line: Ibanez did true to the original. A great piece that will go from a "gritty" clean to "warm smokin" blues to Rock-n-Roll with no noise.
