Dynamic Microphones
Dynamic microphones feature a simple and durable design, making them the best microphones for live performance. Also referred to as moving-coil microphones, dynamic mics contain a small induction coil attached to a diaphragm in the field of a permanent magnet. Once sound enters the microphone, the diaphragm moves, which in turn moves the coil, converting sound into an electrical signal. Dynamic microphones do not require phantom power and are not as sensitive as condenser microphones, so they are less prone to feedback. Mostly used for live vocals, dynamic microphones are able to withstand high sound pressure levels and have a limited frequency response. Audio engineers like to use them on guitar amplifiers, drums, and other instruments on stage and in the studio. They are also a popular option in the world of broadcasting for television, radio, and podcasts.
Polar Patterns: Cardioid vs. Hypercardioid vs. Supercardioid
Dynamic microphones, unlike condenser microphones, are very directional. Most feature a Cardioid polar pattern, a unidirectional pattern that is most sensitive at the front and least sensitive at the back. This offers almost complete rear sound rejection, but allows sound in from the sides. Some are going to feature a Hypercardioid polar pattern, which offers less front sensitivity, but increased rear sensitivity similar to a Figure-8 polar pattern found on some condenser microphones. With this pattern, you get increased sound rejection at the sides, but more sound is allowed in at the back of the mic. A Supercardioid pattern falls somewhere in between, with most sound rejection at the sides.
