I've been playing for almost 50 years, and I've seen a lot of trends in gear come and go. Pinstripes were a game changer when they came out in the 70s, and like all Remo heads, they're always a good bet. That said, a lot of new heads have come out in recent years, and even I started thinking maybe Pinstripes aren't as good as other dual skins like Evans for instance. There's a muted tone to the Evans that I really like and I was having trouble getting that tone out of the Pinstripes. However recently I bought a beautiful used Ludwig kit and I put all new Pinstripes on the batter side and clear Ambassadors on the resonant just because I somehow can't quit thinking Remo are better heads. What I did different this time was I put Remo Tone Control Rings on with the Pinstripes, and all of a sudden, I reached nirvana. They had the beautiful muted pure tone of an Evans, but with the resilience and responsiveness of a Remo head. It was like the best of both worlds! Bottom line, this is the best head I've found. Remos are fthe best, they always have been; and if you merely dampen those high overtones with a dampening ring, you're gonna be sounding better than you ever imagined. Note: I don't work for any gear company. This is my opinion only.
