    Drumsticks 101: The Basics

Drumsticks are defined by several factors including diameter, weight, and length; and they are conveniently narrowed down to a code that is, for the most part, standard to all brands.

Here's how the codes work: the lower the number is, the larger the drumstick will be in diameter. The letter in the code refers to how heavy the stick is (“A” being the lightest model).

For example, a 5A drumstick is the drum set standard because of its light weight and diameter range of (0.551”- 0.585”). The heavier alternative would be a 5B, which due to its heavier weight and diameter range (0.590” - 0.610”), is favorable to drummers playing heavier styles of music. From there, you can either go thinner with a 7A (7B is the heavier alternative) or thicker with a 2A (2B is the heavier alternative). You can even get a pair of signature drumsticks that were designed to the preferred specifications of your favorite drummer.

    Color and Expression

With drumsticks, it’s not only about their size, but it's about their unique character and personality as well! For expression and color, drumsticks are offered with a variety tips and tapers including a nylon tip, which gives a bit more articulation and volume on your cymbals.

    Drumstick Material

Hickory has been commonly used for drumsticks because it's tough and dense while also being well balanced. What good is a drumming tool without more options? From a more dynamic maple drumstick to durable oak drumsticks, the amount of options as far as materials ensure that you're never restrained from your creativity. Did we mention Ahead and their aluminum drumsticks? If you want maximum durability, we recommend giving those a try!
