History of the Violin
The earliest record of violins dates back to the early 1500s. With the arrival of differentiating music genres and new performance styles, many changes in shape, size, strings, and overall design were made along the way. During the 1800s, the modern violin was developed and accompanied the heightening of today's classical compositions. The bow on the other hand (really, in the other hand), originated earlier at the time of the 1st millennium with a design believed to be based off of archery bows. Created for use with preceding stringed instruments, they were eventually applied to violins and finally modernized at the end of the 1700s. A classical instrument, the violin's sound and flair is still in high demand, and is now used in more musical styles than ever before.
Types of Violins
Whether you play classical, rock, country, bluegrass, folk, pop, alternative, or world music, the violin you choose will make a world of difference.
Acoustic violins are the authentic-sounding instruments most players are used to. Our selection at Sam Ash includes a range of top brands including Cremona, Yamaha, and Carlo Robelli, a brand we work closely with that is widely recognized for their high-quality student violins. Varying in wood, fitting materials, inlay, finish, size, and more, there are many details to keep in mind when selecting your instrument—whether you're looking for a beginner/student instrument or a professional instrument to help you meet your next set of musical challenges.
In cases where you're being drowned out by other instruments, or in rooms with strange acoustics, electric violins can help you out. With built-in pickups and electronics, they'll up your volume to project your playing even in noisy and outdoor environments. Some of these models may look like and sound like your typical violin when you're unplugged, but others are made with semi-hollow bodies, sometimes varying in shape from the standard acoustic, and are lighter in weight for traveling and gigging.
From 1/16 to full size, at Sam Ash, we can ensure you get the best of the best in quality craftsmanship, tone, and feel. Our founder, Sam Ash, was a professional violin player himself, so he made sure that his company sold only instruments that passed his standards of quality. With our background and expertise, you'll end up with a violin that fits you and matches your methods.
The Ultimate Violin Destination
Here at Sam Ash, we carry everything you need for your instrument. We offer a huge selection of introductory, intermediate, and advanced violin music books that will keep you focused for hours. Many of our books use chord diagrams and drawings to show you techniques such as rhythm and bowing, and some have CDs enclosed with instructions to teach you how to break down the music, examples, and play-along tracks.
We also have an incredible selection of stringed instrument accessories for upkeep and fun including bows, cases, mutes, shoulder rests, violin stands, pickups, tuners, and stringed instrument maintenance accessories such as rosin and peg drops/dope. We also carry string instrument parts like replacement violin bridges and sets of violin strings to renew your sound and change up your style as you develop your technique.
If you're a violinist looking to record your next album or a player looking to hit the stage, our vast selection of recording and live sound gear including software, audio interfaces, instrument mics, PA systems, and more, are sure to come in handy.
